Book Cover of My Journey - Confessions of a Christian Fundamentalist

This first book of John is the result of the perceived dangers posed by the various groups of religious fundamentalists around the world. It explores his early experience as a staunch Christian fundamentalist and his family background. What type of environment breeds religious fundamentalists? Why are religious fundamentalists so difficult to reason with? Why is it so difficult to change our outlook and mindset once it is set? Why are they so dangerous to us all? How can we overcome this environment of mistrust, intolerance, misunderstanding and hate among the different communities? Can we ever reach a compromise? Do we face the issue directly and use force to wipe them off the face of the Earth? Then we are no different from the members of the medieval Inquisition. What can we expect in the near future if we do not address this critical issue facing the world?

Hopefully, this brief account of John’s life and the subsequent changes in his life will give us an exposure to the background of religious fundamentalism. If we can understand the reasons behind religious fundamentalism, then a solution may be possible. If we can understand how the religious fanatics think and the rationale behind their violent actions, we may be able to plan a counter against them. The religious fanatics in South East Asia, the Indian sub-continent and in the Middle East pose the greatest danger to the world today. Let us hope that it is not too late for us.

This book is an autobiographical account of John’s life and the effect of his migration from Malaysia to Australia back in 1981. It was the country Australia that provided an environment which allowed John to explore all the available information and knowledge. I am sure that if John stayed on in Malaysia, his life would have been very different. In a sense, Australia provides an environment where there is hope that change (tolerance and understanding) may take place, irrespective of the background and mindset of the migrant.

In his search for answers, John accidentally stumbled upon the greatest hoax in history of the West. There are some hilarious moments that enliven the readability of this controversial book. John hopes that the readers will enjoy sharing his life experiences. John’s other books document his other life experiences. The other books focus on the cultural differences between East and West, the Australian migrant scene at the end of the last millennium and his discoveries on science, genetic and palaeontology subjects and their applications and implications to all of us. Another book goes deeper into his search for spirituality in this uncertain world.

Chapter Outline

Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction of John’s background in Malaysia. His own ancestors left South China in 1863 to try their luck in British-administered Malaya. He relates his Christian fundamentalist roots back to his paternal grandfather.

Chapter 2 describes his first religious challenge in life after migrating to Melbourne. In the five years spent in Melbourne, he tried to convert his Jehovah Witnesses teachers to his way of thinking and landed in trouble. He became confused whenever he tried to prove his fundamentalist faith; he discovered evidence to the contrary. He was becoming increasingly worried about his fundamentalist faith and the terrible risk of losing his place in the promised Christian heaven.

Chapter 3 briefly examines the first five years of his sojourn in Sydney. John was evaluating all the available data in the Christian scriptures and realized his previous stand on the inerrancy of the Christian Bible for eternity is no longer tenable. He then started to search for all the historical sources of his fundamentalist faith and beliefs. He began to read widely on a whole range of subjects from science to philosophy.

Chapter 4 talks about his next ten years in Sydney where he read, researched and accumulated as much religious and secular knowledge as he possibly could. He also documented all his new discoveries. During the 1990’s John was slowly abandoning most of his previous fundamentalist beliefs and faith. In the year 2000, he decided to write his first manuscript on the subject of modern Christianity. In doing so, he made a complete break from his culture and religion of birth. Christian fundamentalist friends and relatives now consider John a heretic, disloyal to his original faith and take comfort in the belief that his reward will be the eternal fires of hell. Everyone is now praying anxiously for John’s lost soul and for his eventual redemption.

John relates the benefits of his religious upbringing and also being part of an established religious organization. He outlines the features and characteristics of religious fundamentalists and their organization. He goes on to explain why it is so difficult for such people to contemplate change. It they resort to violent and fanatical means to achieve their perceived goals; their ultimate destination is a surprise.

Chapter 5 & 6 describe some of the new concepts, thoughts and replacement beliefs. John goes through the chronology of his discoveries in the areas of the Trinity concept, the inerrancy of the Christian Bible, the modern Western approach to the subject of homosexuality, the creation event, the worldwide flood, the development of traditional Christian dogma and the actual teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.

The New Age concept of meditation and yoga and their benefits are briefly explained. John tries to explain his understanding of the tricky subject of reincarnation and the reality regarding miracles. Now that the Christian Bible is no longer the sole source of human knowledge and wisdom from God, what are the replacement teachings? He touches on subjects like the new role of the Bible, the origin of the Trinity concept, the biblical and historical Jesus of Nazareth, the traditional claim of Jesus’ divinity, the background to the virgin birth, bodily resurrection, original sin and redemption, the symbol of the cross, the replacement of existing religious dogma, the relationship with other religions and the nature of God.

Chapter 7 briefly describes his continuing search for enlightenment and spirituality.  John used his personal experience to relate his journey of enlightenment in his own words. He explains why it is so difficult for him to develop an open mindset. It took him ten long years of serious study. John provides his own classification of human intellectual development from the beginning of human consciousness in the Age of Fantasy to the modern Age of Spirituality. He ends the chapter with his experience on his search for spirituality.

Chapter 8 contains John’s confession of his past as a religious fundamentalist. He subsequently realized that there is an alternate and better way to promote tolerance, peace and understanding among all communities. He concludes the book with diminished hope for a troubled world. It is a very difficult task to change the mindset of people brought up in their ways. John wish the world the best of luck for the future.
